The standard estimate is 1.04 litres per kilogram of grain. This can vary from 0.9 to 1.2 L/kg depending on grain type, crush fineness, and whether you squeeze your BIAB bag.

Does grain type affect absorption?

Slightly. Flaked grains and oats tend to absorb more (up to 1.2 L/kg), while highly kilned or roasted grains absorb slightly less. For most grain bills, 1.04 L/kg is a reliable average.

Can I reduce grain absorption?

BIAB brewers can squeeze the bag to recover 0.5-1L. Fly sparging recovers more extract and water than batch sparging. Some brewers also stir and let the grain bed drain slowly for better recovery.
