How We Calculate This
Potential Extract
Potential extract is the maximum sugar available from your grain: Potential Points = Grain (kg) x PPG x 8.345. PPG (Points per Pound per Gallon) is a standard measure of extract potential — Maris Otter is ~37, Pale Malt ~36, Munich ~34.
Mash Efficiency
Mash Efficiency = (Pre-Boil Gravity Points x Pre-Boil Volume) / Potential Points x 100. This tells you how effectively you extracted sugar during the mash and lauter.
Brewhouse Efficiency
Brewhouse Efficiency = (Post-Boil Gravity Points x Post-Boil Volume) / Potential Points x 100. This accounts for all losses and is the number to use when designing future recipes.
